- Wow, I never noticed before that they show a picture of Kira's file here, and she has long hair in it. Anyway, A+ opening scene. Love the change on Kira's face when she hears that Kai Opaka is visiting.
- I also never noticed before how short Opaka is.
- I also love how happy Opaka and Kira look when invited on an impromptu trip through the wormhole. And Bashir inviting himself along. XD
- I always wonder why people don't have seat belts in spaceships. Seems important whenever you lose inertial dampeners, which happens, y'know, every other week.
- Such a good Kira episode. Also: a fairly heavy-handed metaphor for forever-conflict in the Middle East...
- Sisko+Bashir+Kira and Dax+O'Brien are some interesting/unusual combos here. That said, I have to say the Dax+O'Brien technobabble-filled B-plot here is pretty dull. Wish they had done more with those two characters!
- I think this is a pretty good episode for Bashir (maybe his first in the series so far?). He gets a lot to do here, including tackling Sisko to save his life and his analysis of the nanite technology. The brief exchange with Bashir's amused joke about assisting a jailbreak vs. Sisko's exhaustion highlight their different maturity/experience, I think. Once again, this episode (like the first episode, "Emissary") really highlights the difference between Bashir in Social Mode vs. Bashir in Doctor Mode -- in Social Mode, he's easygoing and laidback, a bit silly; in Doctor Mode, he's steely and authoritative. (I think the contrast between these two modes also shows up in "The Wire" and Bashir's interactions with Garak-as-patient vs. Garak-as-friend.)
- "My work is here now, Commander. But your pagh and mine will cross again." ...And then we never heard from her again...
I'm not sure what to think about this one. I really like the moment between Kira and Opaka here, but I kind of think it's a bit of a random way to write Opaka off the show -- on only her second appearance too. But then clearing the way for Kai Winn was a good move in the long run, and I think in general the theme here of Bajor needing to know how to live and move forward is a good/interesting one. So yeah, not sure what to think, to be honest!
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- A bit tough, but I feel like you could add a Quark scene to the episode. Maybe he meets/has a brief interaction with Opaka (Opaka checks his pagh??), or maybe Odo complains to him about his stress at having lost the kai somehow.
- Or maybe a coda where Quark and Odo are discussing what happened to Opaka, what it means for Bajor, talking to Bashir or Kira about their experiences on the moon, etc.
