Quark/Odo fan community

How are people doing on watching DS9 episodes? Anyone ready to move on with season 2 or shall we push back to June, maybe around June 7th?

In either case, because of issues with my health, there might be some disruptions in the watch schedule from time to time where I might need to push some episode discussions back. Should be fine in any case, though. Just let me know if you have a preference for continuing in May or holding off until June!

Hi everyone! We're about two-thirds of the way through season 2 now, so we're going to go on another mid-season writing break. In particular, I am kind of rammed at work right now and for the next few weeks too, so I thought we should take a longer break this time, about a month or so. What do people think about picking up again around April 5th? I'm also happy to extend longer if people need more time. I need some breathing time!

This week we're discussing... episode 2x16 "Shadowplay"!

Episode synopsis: Dax and Odo visit a planet in the Gamma Quadrant and investigate a mystery where villagers keep suddenly going missing. Meanwhile, Kira, in charge of keeping Quark in line while Odo is away, gets an unexpected visit from Vedek Bareil. Meanwhile, Jake struggles to tell his dad that he's not interested in the activities Ben has set up to prepare him for applying to Starfleet Academy.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: This is an Odo-centric episode -- he is discussing his love life with Dax, investigating a mystery, and bonding with a girl who is openly and innocently curious about his Changeling nature and life. Quark has the B-plot where he is foiled by Kira in his attempts to do crimes while Odo is gone and he almost successfully manages to distract Kira by arranging for Bareil to visit the station.

This week we're discussing... episode 2x10 "Sanctuary"!

Episode synopsis: A new ship comes through the wormhole, bearing the refugees of a whole Gamma Quadrant civilization, the Skrreea, who are looking for their promised land of Kentanna. Conflict arises when the Skrreea decide that, given what they know, the prophesied Kentanna must be Bajor.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo is in several scenes, accompanying the newcomers as they're shown around the station and commenting from time to time, and confronting Nog after he has pulled a prank on some Skrreean teens. Odo and Quark have a scene together when Quark arrives to pick Nog up from the security office and the two discuss the Skrreea's presence on the station. Quark has a scene at the beginning of the episode where he complains to Kira about the musician she asked Quark to employ in his bar, and then a scene after his conversation with Odo where he breaks up a fight between Nog and the Skrreean teen looking for revenge.

Quodo Mini-fest is a low-pressure exchange that's basically just an excuse to have a little explosion of Quodo fanwork goodness. Sign-ups are open now and will remain open until 10 January!

Just some notes on minor tweaks this year:
- I decided to schedule a longer post-deadline pinch-hitting period this year. Notably, this means that the work deadline is 4 days earlier this year than it has been in the past. Sign-up deadline remains the same.
- Tweaked the wording of the rules to make it more clear that works need to be complete.
- Added a rule that people with unacknowledged Quodo Mini-fest gifts from past years will not go out for pinch hit if they don't have a gift at the work deadline.

This week we're discussing... episode 2x08 "Necessary Evil"! (This is the last episode we're discussing before going on our first mid-season break, by the way!)

Episode synopsis: A woman pays Quark to bring her a box hidden in a shop on DS9; Quark is shot and put into a coma after peeking at its contents, which have now gone missing. Odo flashes back to the first case he was ever asked to solve on Terok Nor, which he was never able to close: the murder of the woman's husband, a Bajoran chemist on Terok Nor. In both cases, Kira's involvement forces Odo to choose between truth and justice.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo is the main/POV character of this episode, but the events are instigated by/centered around Quark. Quark meets with Pallra, breaks into a room with Rom, and then is shot and spends the rest of the episode unconscious in the infirmary. In the past, Quark is interrogated by Odo regarding Kira's alibi. Over the whole episode, Odo is solving two cases: one in the past involving murder and sabotage and talking to Dukat, Pallra, Kira, and Quark, and one in the present involving blackmail and attempted murder and talking to Rom, Pallra, Kira, and Sisko.

Hi everyone!

I was posting an update on DeviantArt and realized I meant to ask for some feedback on planned changes to Quodo Mini-fest before it starts up again. I am planning on running it as normal from January to Feb 14 (Valentine's Day), although if this timeframe doesn't work for you, do let me know.

The main change that I was thinking about making in terms of Quodo Mini-fest's rules is changing it so that, if you're without a gift after the deadline and you haven't commented on gifts you've gotten in previous rounds of Quodo Mini-fest, I will not seek out a pinch hitter to fill your request.

While I do generally like the setup we've had so far, where everyone who signs up gets a gift regardless of whether they turn something in or not, I feel like when it comes to filling post-deadline pinch hits in particular, there's been some situations where seeking out a last-minute pinch hitter was probably too stressful of a thing to do and I probably should not have done this.

In general, filling post-deadline pinch hits in this event has been fairly difficult because the time between the deadline and when the collection opens is quite short. The fanwork minimums are pretty low so that mitigates some of that issue, but depending on the prompts, it can be hard to fill with a short/quick work, and it can just be hard for someone to schedule time to make something with a window so short. One thing I could do that would help remove some of this pressure would be to adjust the schedule to make the deadline earlier and the buffer period longer, and I'm definitely open to doing this.

However, there is still another issue, which is that it feels weird to ask for a tight-turnaround pinch hit when it's unlikely that the person whom the gift is for will comment on it. I don't want to make someone producing works on short notice feel like their effort was wasted! And if someone doesn't have a gift and multiple people work on something at the same time, we can end up in a situation where multiple gifts get made for a person that aren't actually acknowledged later.

So in short, proposed change: After the deadline, before I post the list of replacement gifts needed, I will check if the recipient has any gifts in previous rounds of Quodo Mini-fest they haven't commented on and will make a decision about whether to include that sign-up on the list of needed pinch hits on that basis. (If you haven't participated in any rounds of Quodo Mini-fest previously, the benefit of the doubt will obviously be granted!)

I also plan on clarifying in the rules that works submitted to this event have to be complete i.e. stories have to be self-contained / have a beginning/middle/end, and art pieces have to convey a complete idea, even if the work is short, sketchy, low-effort, etc.

So please let me know what you think about the above changes.
- How is the schedule/timeframe of this event? Would you like it moved? Would you like a longer gap between when works are due and when the works are scheduled to be revealed?
- Only seek post-deadline pinch hitters for recipients who have commented on gifts in the past -- yea/nay?
- Anything else you want to suggest?
