Quodo in Every Episode - Info & Rules
While the poll to decide the summer event is going on, I would like to announce another long-term event/challenge I'll be kicking off:

The goal of the Quodo in Every Episode challenge is for fans to collectively produce at least one Quodo fic set in or themed around each episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. An episode will be considered checked off if an accessible Quodo fic focused on that episode exists, whether on AO3 or some other website, an old fic or one newly created. (This includes fic still accessible through an Internet Archive backup.) It all counts, so let's round up all the single-episode Quodo fics that exist out there, one episode at a time!
This event is very much inspired by
SirenOfTitan/
lezridax's Garashir in Every Episode challenge.
weaverofwords had the idea to do a Quodo version, so... here we are. The main difference, however, is that the event will be mostly hosted on Dreamwidth (optionally, Discord), where I will be hosting weekly discussions focused on a random DS9 episode. Each week, I will post a brief summary of the episode and prompt members to round up any existing Quodo works set in that episode and (if none exist) toss around ideas about the Quodo fic potential of that episode to inspire new works!
There are 176 episodes of DS9 (more or less) so this project will last... *calculates* the next 3 years. 😅 Don't worry -- this project is meant to be chill and just an excuse to revisit some good (or not-so-good...) DS9 episodes and talk about Quodo with other fans. We are currently going through the show's episodes in order -- you can check the Quodo in Every Episode discussion tag to see the latest discussion.
What counts as an "episode" for this challenge?
For simplicity, if an episode has its own title, it will be counted as an episode. So two-parters sharing the same title except for "Part 1" vs. "Part 2" will be considered a single episode. This means there are 170 episodes in total.
Unfortunately, this does mean that multi-episode arcs where each episode occurs close in time and is dependent on having watched the other episodes are still separate episodes if each episode has its own title, which will be challenging. Let's just try our best!
What does it mean for a Quodo fic to be "centered" around an episode?
The fic must occur during the timespan of the episode, or shortly afterward, responding to the events of the episode.
Some examples: You can write a missing scene or give Quark and Odo a subplot together in the episode, especially if Quark and Odo don't get scenes together and/or don't feature in the episode. You can rewrite the episode and change its plot to make it more Quodo. You can write a coda to an episode that features Quark and Odo interacting (just make sure this scene is clearly tied to the episode). You can write Quark and Odo in an established relationship during an episode and show how that changes (the interpretation of) the events of the episode.
If a fic responds to the events of episode X but is definitively set during episode Y, this would generally be considered an episode Y fic.
I already wrote a fic that I think fits an episode. Can I put it forward?
Yes! You're encouraged to link it at any time, either on the episode discussion post (if one exists) or the masterlist.
Can I submit a fic that features a different ship but has Quodo on the side?
No, Quodo has to be the main/most prominent pairing for this challenge.
Does platonic Quodo count?
In most cases, yes. Platonic Quodo fics must still be focused on their relationship, and submissions should be, roughly, at least as Quodo as canon. So if an episode has no Quodo interactions, it would be on-theme to write a scene where they get a scene together and interact platonically. However, if an episode already features intense platonic Quodo, then it may not be within the spirit of the event to write a less shippy dynamic for them. Use your judgment whether you think a fic fits the theme of the event.
I have a Quodo fic that takes place in/has missing scenes from various episodes. Would it count as filling each one of those episodes?
In most cases, no. One fic/work can only fill one episode, and it has to be centered around that episode. If you think there is one clearly dominant episode the fic is based around, or if you think a work can be broken down into individual, standalone ficlets each focused on an episode, then you can consider submitting them for the relevant episode(s). Otherwise, they probably do not fit the theme of this challenge.
Are there any length requirements?
Nope. Fic can be as long or short as you like.
Do non-fanfic works count?
Unfortunately, no -- this is a fanfic-themed challenge. However, feel free to rec (including self-rec) any relevant works you have -- we'd love to hear about them! Multimedia fanworks that have a fic/story component to them (for example, comics) do count.
Do non-English works count?
Absolutely! As long as you are able to read the fic to determine whether it fits the theme of this challenge, you can put it forward to be added to the masterlist.
Are AUs (alternate universes) allowed?
It is absolutely okay to do a canon divergence (change the events/plot from canon). Non-canonical setting change (e.g. soulmate AUs) and character change AUs (e.g. roleswap, genderswap, etc.) are generally not allowed, unless you believe the fic could more or less be inserted into the show's canon with the original setting and characters without needing to change the fic significantly (i.e. the setting/character changes are entirely incidental to the fic). Use your judgment on this one.
I'm working on a fic for an episode that was already covered and discussed long ago. Can I still post it for this challenge?
Yes! This challenge is always ongoing and we welcome submissions at any time. Feel free to leave a comment on that episode's discussion post or the masterlist, and we will add it.
What is the schedule for episode discussions?
At the moment, we are discussing one episode per week. Note that two-part episodes (sharing the same episode name but with "part 1" and "part 2") will be given two weeks for discussion. After ~8-9 episodes/discussions, we'll have a mid-season writing break to focus solely on writing fills for Quodo-less episodes. And then between seasons, there will also be another one-week break for people to sign up for a writing challenge if they wish.
Earlier, we were going in a random order, so some of the episodes already have discussion posts created for them. Depending on the amount of older episode discussions in the scehdule, some weeks might be review weeks that discuss one or more of these previously-discussed episodes; some weeks might be new weeks where we feature a not-previously-discussed episode; and some weeks might be a mix of both where we review an older episode AND also a new episode. I'll try to make it clear in each post what's going on, but you can always consult the discussion tag to find current and recent discussions!
How do the writing challenges work?
Before the start of a season, you can request a selection of episodes that don't have any Quodo fics for them yet, and I'll reply with a list of three episodes. Your challenge is to do something with one of those episodes before the end of the season. The challenge post goes up between seasons, but you can actually sign up anytime during the season too. During the mid-season breaks, you are also allowed to request a new set of episodes. This can be done if you haven't been able to do anything with the episodes you got, or you HAVE been able to do something and now just want some more episodes.
Each between-season break has two types of writing challenges:
• The backward-facing challenge involves getting a random selection of episodes from previous seasons (so, going into season 3, you'll get a random selection of season 1 & 2 episodes).
• The forward-facing challenge involves getting a random selection of episodes from the upcoming season (so, going into season 3, you'll get a random selection of season 3 episodes).
Can I sign up for both types of challenges at the same time?
Yep, it's up to you.
Do I have to sign up to a challenge in order to write/discuss episodes?
Nope! The challenges are just to help you narrow down your options with some suggestions and to give you a timeframe to try to complete something.
Have a question not answered above? Let me know in the comments! Anonymous commenting is on, so you don't need a Dreamwidth account to participate.
