This week we're discussing... episode 1x10 "Move Along Home"!

Episode synopsis: DS9 has visitors from the Gamma Quadrant, the games-loving Wadi. Quark agrees to play one of their board games, unaware that the senior officers are the game pieces!

What The Boys are up to in this episode: This is a Quark-centric episode. He is talking to and entertaining the Wadi at his dabo tables, and playing the board game and learning its rules as he goes. Meanwhile, Odo is investigating Sisko and the others' disappearance, and sneaks on board the Wadi ship, which only ends up transporting him to Quark's bar. From then on, Odo tries to assist Quark in making decisions in the game to keep the officers out of danger. After the game finishes, Odo rats out Quark and his cheating of the Wadi to Sisko. The Wadi are not particularly bothered by this, though, and Quark hurries to make a business arrangement with them.

This week we're discussing... episode 1x09 "The Passenger"!

Episode synopsis: The officers at DS9 rescue a security officer transporting a dangerous prisoner. Despite the prisoner apparently dying in the transport ship accident, the security officer is convinced her prisoner is still alive and actively making preparations to hijack an upcoming deuridium shipment arriving at DS9.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo and Quark share a scene toward the beginning where they talk about Dax, desire, and deuridium shipments. Odo has several scenes where he is talking to Primmin and/or Sisko about who is in charge of security on the station and responding to breaches of security, and a scene where he talks to Kajada about Vantika. Quark has several scenes where he arranges/speaks to mercenaries that he has hired at the request of Vantika. Odo and Quark have a second scene together where Quark is questioned about an attempt on Kajada's life that happened in his bar. In the rest of the episode, Odo is in Ops responding to Vantika's hijacking.

This week we're discussing... episode 1x07 "Q-Less"!

Episode synopsis: Vash (and her traveling partner, Q) are picked up in the Gamma Quadrant. With them come some mysterious and potentially life-threatening power fluctuations. As the crew tries to find the source of the fluctuations, Vash and Quark auction off some rare Gamma Quadrant artifacts.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark has a big role in this episode, meeting with Vash several times to strike a deal about selling her Gamma Quadrant artifacts, conducting the auction, and then seeing if he can entice Vash into going into business with him rather than getting a job at the Daystrom Institute. Odo has two appearances: one very brief scene where he's keeping an eye on the wealthy visitors coming aboard the station and comments on the power fluctuations, and then a longer scene with Quark in his office where they talk about material possessions and Quark tries to sell Odo some goods.

This week we're discussing... episode 1x06 "Captive Pursuit"!

Episode synopsis: DS9 receives its first visitor from the Gamma Quadrant: in this case, an alien on the run. Despite befriending O'Brien, the alien is tight-lipped about who he is and who is hunting him.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark's exploitative contracts are mentioned in the opening scene. Later, Quark meets Tosk in the bar and tries to sell him on holosuite programs; later, he attempts to cheer O'Brien up, who is upset about his inability to help Tosk. Odo has a scene where he confronts Tosk over his tampering with DS9's security grid; later, he is part of the team that confronts the hunters from the Gamma Quadrant; finally, he is tasked with handing Tosk over to the hunters but is tricked by O'Brien into relinquishing this duty. When he realizes what O'Brien is up to, he moves to stop him, but Sisko tells him not to hurry.

New discussion this week! This week we're discussing... episode 1x04 "A Man Alone"! (Fun fact: This episode was originally scheduled to be the very last episode discussed in the random ordering. So it got bumped up in the schedule by QUITE a lot!)

Episode synopsis: Odo is framed for the murder of Ibudan, a formerly-convicted criminal whom Odo put away during the Cardassian occupation. As public opinion turns against Odo, he discovers that people are not as tolerant or trusting of shapeshifters as he thought.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: This is an Odo-centric episode, so he's in various scenes confronting Ibudan, conducting a murder investigation, clashing with Sisko over his role as security chief, and being hounded by hostile mobs. Quark has two scenes with Odo, one at the beginning where they discuss "coupling" and one later when Quark visits Odo in his trashed office, and another scene where he defends Odo's honor from various critical Bajorans.

Pre-season 1 fic challenge sign-up

Hi everyone! Thank you for giving me some feedback on the previous post. In light of the comments, I will be making several major changes to the way this Quodo in Every Episode event is run:

1. I will be switching the episode discussions over to chronological/broadcast order rather than random order.

2. I will insert several breaks between episode discussions to give people time that they can fully dedicate to writing fics rather than keeping on top of episode discussion. (Breaks can also be used to catch up on the episode discussions if you've fallen behind.)

3. Also, between seasons, I will also insert a break week where you can not only do writing/catch-up as above, but also sign up to get a random selection of currently-ficless DS9 episodes (either ones that have been discussed in the past or ones that are from the coming season) and the aim is for you to try to fill however many of them you want before the next season break.

There are two options for the writing challenges:

- A backward-facing option where you get a random selection of episodes already discussed that don't have any Quodo fics for them.

- A forward-facing option where you get a random selection of episodes from the upcoming season that I believe don't have any Quodo fics for them, and your objective is to focus on those episodes for a Quodo fic.

At any of the mid-season breaks, you can also reroll your episode set if you find they aren't working for you, or if you finish a fic for them and want other options. And then you can request a new set during each between-season break, before the next season starts up.

I have updated the Info and Rules post to contain these format changes.

So the linear-order episode discussions will start next week. In the meantime, consider this the between-season break week leading into season 1.

In this case, because we're at the beginning of the show and haven't discussed any episodes yet, the backward-facing challenge will give you 3 random episodes of the previously-discussed 47 random episodes that don't have Quodo fics for them yet, and your goal is to do something for one of them before the next between-season break. (In future between-season breaks, the backward-facing option will only give you episodes from seasons already discussed, so the pre-season 2 break will select from season 1 episodes only; the pre-season 3 break will select episodes from season 1 and 2, etc.)

The forward-facing challenge will give you 3 random season 1 episodes that I think don't have Quodo fics yet and your goal is to do something with them. (In both the backward and forward-looking cases, it is a possibility I might give you an episode that turns out to actually have Quodo fics written for it -- I'll try to avoid this, but it's hard to find fics sometimes, especially when they're not tagged with the specific episode tag.)

You can sign up for one or both of the challenges if you like. To sign up, just leave a comment saying which challenge(s) you'd like to sign up for and I'll reply with your set of episodes.

Hi everyone! Believe it or not, in four days, it will have been one year since we started the Quodo in Every Episode project (I posted the challenge information on March 23rd, and our first discussion was on March 24th). In the time since, we have discussed 47 of ST:DS9's 170 episodes (or 28%). The season with the most episodes discussed is season 1 with 10/20 episodes, while the season with the fewest episodes is season 4 with only 4/26.

Now that we are approaching this one-year milestone, I'd actually like to take some time to check in and ask if this event is working for you. Participation has dropped off quite a bit since the start, and for a while now, I've been the only one responding to episode discussions. I don't mind talking to myself (I will always enjoy a DS9 rewatch and I have fun discussing each episode with my partner), but it also makes me wonder if the interest is still there and, if so, if there are some obvious and easy things I could do to make it easier for people who want to participate to do so. Namely:

- Should I switch the discussions to be in chronological (broadcast) order? Originally, I decided on a random order because (1) I thought the random order would make it easy for someone to drop in and out of the event as their time allows, as missing some episode discussions wouldn't affect your ability to join the next conversation without having to catch up, (2) the element of surprise of what episode is under discussion each week, and (3) to mix things up between early and late seasons for the sake of variety, especially since early seasons Quodo is very different from late seasons Quodo. However, I think the main issue with doing the random order is that if someone is using this event to watch DS9 with someone who hasn't seen the show before, the random episode ordering just really doesn't work.

So: would people prefer to switch to a linear ordering of episode discussions? It would be a fairly simple change. I would probably just go through each episode in order and post a mix of catch-up posts and new episode discussions. For example, I would start with a catch-up post for the first three episodes (1x01/02 "Emissary" and 1x03 "Past Prologue") where people can watch or review the episode transcripts and post their thoughts on those on existing discussion posts, before moving on to a new discussion for 1x04 "A Man Alone", then the next week, I'd post a catch-up for 1x05 "Babel" plus new discussion for 1x06 "Captive Pursuit", and just keep progressing like that.

- Should I slow down the pace and give people more time to add their thoughts? Currently I do one episode a week but I'm happy to slow down the pace. I'm not in a rush, and it would give me more time to peruse Quodo fics lol.

- Something else? Change up the format, add some fic-writing challenges to encourage people to write or chat about what they're writing, something else preventing you from participating that I haven't thought of?

Let me know if you have any preferences about or issues with the way this challenge is run. Are people just shy? If so, let me know what would help with that. Or if people aren't particularly interested in the challenge anymore, that's fine and also helpful for me to know! Let me know what you think!

This week we have another two-parter, so this discussion will last two weeks until March 30th. This time, we're discussing... episode 3x11/12 "Past Tense" parts 1 & 2!

Episode synopsis: A transporter accident leads to Sisko, Dax, and Bashir being transported back in time to San Francisco in the year 2024, just days before the Bell Riots erupted in one of the city's sanctuary districts. In order to preserve the timeline, Sisko must take the role of Gabriel Bell in a tense hostage negotiation.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark's Obligatory Scene is towards the beginning of the first part -- he uses an emergency channel to call the Defiant visiting Earth to inform them that the Nagus would appreciate the Federation freeing his nephew as thanks for making contact with the Dominion. Odo is on the bridge of the Defiant and is in various scenes reacting to events and findings, and operates the transporter for Kira and O'Brien.

This week we're discussing... episode 7x02 "Shadows and Symbols"!

Episode synopsis: Ezri Dax introduces herself to the Siskos and accompanies them on a trip to find answers about Ben's mother Sarah. Meanwhile, Worf, O'Brien, Bashir, and, unexpectedly, Quark serve on a mission to Dominion space daring enough to ensure Jadzia a place in Sto-vo-kor. Meanwhile, Odo accompanies Kira on a potentially suicidal face-off against Senator Cretak over Romulan armaments furtively placed on one of Bajor's moons.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark is a late arrival aboard Martok's Rotarran and has several scenes aboard the ship where he complains, needles Worf, and basically is just a fish out of water on a Klingon ship. Odo has a scene where he discusses Kira's blockade plan with her and then accompanies her as she leads the small fleet of Bajoran ships blocking Romulans from advancing, comparing her favorably to a character from one of his detective books. They both show up briefly at the end to be surprised by the arrival of a new Dax on the station.

This week we're discussing... episode 3x24 "Shakaar"!

Episode synopsis: When the first minister of Bajor's provisional government passes away, Kai Winn is appointed acting first minister until an election can be held. A conflict between Winn and the head of Kira's old resistance cell over reclamators almost sparks a civil war. Meanwhile, O'Brien is on a hot streak at darts.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo has one scene where he acts as a sounding board for Kira to vent her anger over Kai Winn and her popularity. Quark has several scenes in the B plotline where he sets up a betting pool on dart games against O'Brien. This ends up backfiring and Quark has to make a big payout.

Hi everyone! This is just to say that I've decided to push the collection opening date back a week for Quodo Mini-fest. It's a busy time, at least for me, and I hope this makes it easier for people to make some gifts.

Second, I will also be pushing the Quodo in Every Episode schedule back a week to help me focus on the modding tasks needed for Quodo Mini-fest. So the current discussion (6x24 "Time's Orphan") will continue into next week. A new discussion will be posted Sunday 23 February.

Finally, this year we've gotten quite a few longer fics for Quodo Mini-fest, so I will be staggering the reveals of works. Art and short fic will be revealed on Friday 21 February, and then longer fics will be revealed on subsequent day(s).

Anyway, this week we're discussing... episode 6x24 "Time's Orphan"!

Episode synopsis: While on a family vacation to a Bajoran colony, Molly O'Brien falls through a time portal. The Molly that Miles and Keiko end up recovering from the portal is ten years older, having survived by herself on an uninhabited planet and possessing little ability to handle modern society.

Quark has one scene where he informs Miles that his holosuite timeslot is up, and then later gets bitten on the ear by a stressed Molly.

Episode synopsis: A killer with a vendetta is taking out members of the Shakaar resistance cell one by one, with Kira as the ultimate/main target.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo appears throughout the episode, responding to the murders, speculating on the murderer's methods, motive, identity, etc., and trying to prevent Kira from going after the murderer herself. Quark appears in one scene, where he has a PADD addressed to Kira with a message from the killer on it.

This week we're discussing... episode 3x26 "The Adversary"!

Episode synopsis: The Defiant is sent on a mission with Ambassador Krajensky to protect Federation colonies on the edge of Tzenkethi space following a coup on the Tzenkethi homeworld. However, along the way, the main systems are discovered to be compromised by a saboteur, who is revealed to be a Changeling. The crew must race to discover the Changeling and regain control of the ship before the Defiant starts a war with the Tzenkethi by launching an unprovoked attack on one of their settlements.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark and Odo are both at the party celebrating Sisko's promotion to captain at the beginning of the episode (this is Quark's only scene). Odo is part of the mission to Tzenkethi space, serving as the Defiant's communications officer. He's involved in various tense scenes as the senior officers attempt to root out the Changeling saboteur, including a conversation with Eddington about how he eschews the use of weapons. He has a stand-off with the Changeling saboteur that ends in the Changeling's death and a warning that the Founders are already everywhere in the Alpha Quadrant.

This week we're discussing... episode 5x15 "By Inferno's Light"!

Episode synopsis: The continuation of "In Purgatory's Shadow" -- Bashir, Worf, and Garak have to figure out how to escape the Dominion camp and alert the station of the Changeling Bashir, which is more difficult now that Tain is dead. Meanwhile, Dukat announces that Cardassia has made an alliance with the Dominion. The Federation, Klingons, and Romulans prepare for a big confrontation with the Dominion at DS9, but the Dominion has another plan involving just one runabout piloted by the Changeling Bashir.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark has a single scene with Ziyal in his bar where he complains that the imminent Dominion victory will ruin his business opportunities. Odo is mentioned a couple of times but never appears!

This week we're discussing... episode 2x24 "The Collaborator"!

Episode synopsis: A collaborator who has information regarding the circumstances of the suicide of Prylar Bek during the occupation gives Vedek Winn the chance to sink Bareil's candidacy for kai. Kira finds herself pressured into investigating Bareil's role in the Cardassian massacre of Bajoran resistance fighters in Kendra Valley and the prylar's ensuing suicide.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo has several scenes where he arrests Kubus and helps Kira investigate the communication that happened between the Vedek Assembly and Prylar Bek shortly before his suicide. Quark has one scene with Odo, where Odo and Kira press Quark into unsealing a locked file in the Vedek Assembly's records.

This week we're discussing... episode 6x05 "Favor the Bold"! (Also, sorry for not announcing with a post here, but Quodo Mini-fest V sign-ups are now open! You have until Friday 10 January to sign up. Yayayay!)

Episode synopsis: The fifth episode in the six-part Dominion occupation arc that opens season 6: Things are not going well on the station as Rom is scheduled for execution and the minefield blocking the wormhole is about to come down. Unable to get Odo to take action, Kira presses Ziyal to speak to Dukat on Rom's behalf, leading to a breakdown in Ziyal and Dukat's relationship. The Federation moves up the timeline of its operation to retake DS9 when it hears about the imminent removal of the minefield.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark attempts unsuccessfully to gain admittance to Odo's quarters to speak to Odo; visits his brother in his cell and promises to get him out; finds out from Damar that the minefield is coming down; and urges Kira to send a message to the Federation. Odo has two scenes where he converses with the female changeling, and then tries to apologize to Kira, who does not accept the apology.
