Quo-do the Thing! -- An event to finish your Quodo WIP(s)

With 5 votes for the ship week (3 on Tumblr, 2 on DW) and 8 votes for the WIP-finishing event (7 on Tumblr, 1 on DW), we are doing the WIP-finishing/motivation event this summer! So welcome to Quo-do the Thing! -- an event to finish your Quodo WIP(s)! :D

The purpose of this event is to provide encouragement, support, and a deadline for finishing up either a Quodo work you're already working on or something you'd like to start. I've tried to design the event to be as helpful as possible for motivating people to finish or make as much progress as possible on their WIPs. However, I have so far largely structured this based on what I would personally find helpful having participated in similar events in the past. If you have suggestions about changes to the timeline/structure/process that would make the event more helpful to you, I would love to hear them!

Schedule:
April 1: Sign-ups open
June 1-7: Optional check-in #1
July 1-7: Optional check-in #2
August 1-7: Last check-in/promo post date-claiming
August ~8: Posting schedule published
August 10-24: Scheduled posting dates
August 25-31: Amnesty week/free posting

November 30: Final wrap-up/celebration and masterlist

Note: Schedule is subject to change.

This event involves four aspects: sign-ups, creation period, promotion period, and final posting period/wrap-up. More detail on each of these below.

General event information

Which sites is this event being run on?
I will be running this event mainly on Dreamwidth (for information posts), Tumblr (for reminders and publicity), and Discord (for discussions/chat/help). We also have a Carrd and I will be crossposting info to DeviantArt. Participating solely through email is also a possibility. Dreamwidth is the only site where I will be putting the longer information posts as I find it has the best reading experience (quick to load, easy to read and find information). However, you do not need a Dreamwidth account in order to participate.

Are there any minimum lengths/effort level for works?
Nope. Works of every length and size are allowed for this event.

Do I have to have started or published the work for it to count?
Nope. You can start a new work for this event. This event is geared toward helping people finish their projects, so I recommend using it to finish a project you're stuck on, you've wanted to start or finish for a while, which you might be a bit intimidated to start, etc. However, ultimately, it's up to you! Anything you want to make is eligible for this event!

How many WIPs/projects can I use for this event?
As many as you like. The sign-up form only allows specifying ten at a time but feel free to fill out the sign-up form multiple times.

Is it possible to drop projects or drop out of the event entirely if I realize it's not happening?
Yep. The easiest way to do this is to edit your original sign-up form. Another way would be to comment on a post, or message me to let me know.

Is there any penalty for dropping out, especially dropping out late?
Nope! This event is for you to use as you like, so you're free to drop out at any time. If you have already claimed a date in the promotion period, please let us know so that we know that the date is free.

Sign-ups

Is it mandatory to sign up?
Yes, mainly just to let me know who is participating in this event and to give me a heads up on what works might be added to the AO3 collection.

What information is needed to sign-up?
- Your email (mostly used to give you a copy of your sign-up info; I will not use email for communication unless you indicate a preference for me to do so)
- Your name/username
- What platform(s) you will be using to participate in the event (helps me keep on top of crossposting announcements)
- Your username on that platform(s), especially if different from above

For each project:
- Title or identifier of project (something that uniquely picks this project out for you)
- Medium of the project
- There are also various optional questions you can answer about your projects if you want to (the intention is for these to help you with project planning)

I tried to keep the information collected as minimal as possible (just what is needed to help me run the event), while still allowing some flexibility if people want to add a bit more planning to their project.

When is the last date to sign up?
I recommend signing up early in the event period just as a way to start thinking about your WIP(s) again and start planning how you'll use the creation period, and also so I have a sense of how many people are participating and on what platforms. So I recommend signing up by the end of May / by the first check-in. However, you can sign up at any time before you would like to post for the event, so I recommend by the end of the August check-in or by the end of August at the latest if using the amnesty posting days. You can also edit your sign-up at any time to add or drop projects, so don't feel like you're locked in to your projects early on.

Can I change my sign-up?
Yes, an edit link will be given to you after you submit your form. Feel free to use that link to edit your form later. If you lose the edit link, you can fill out a fresh sign-up if you would like to change the information submitted.

How many WIPs can I sign up with?
The form requires at least one, and allows you to put in up to ten projects. If you need more than that, you can fill out the form multiple times. I recommend putting the highest priority projects and the projects most likely to be finished/worked on first and then maybe delay putting in lower-priority or "stretch" projects until later.

I want to participate but I don't have any WIPs or ideas of fanworks to make...
Feel free to brainstorm with us! We have an ongoing Quodo in Every Episode challenge to make a fic for every episode -- the discussions might also be helpful for inspiring fanworks aside from fic. In Discord, we are also working on collecting plot bunnies and putting them up for adoption. Or feel free to prompt your followers for prompts, etc. etc.

Creation period

When can I start working on my WIPs/projects? Do I need to wait for when sign-ups end?
You can start working immediately from when the event starts (April). You do not have to have signed up to start working on something for this project.

What are check-ins? Are they required?
Check-ins are optional points where you say how your project is going. You can treat them as seriously as you like -- again, the intent is to provide whatever structure is ultimately helpful for you to finish your projects. For people who like accountability and need regular deadlines in order to make progress, I recommend treating these as mandatory and a good time to reassess if you're on track with your project(s). For people who are stressed by deadlines or who consistently make progress without check-ins, you can either skip them or use them as an opportunity to chat with other people about your projects.

How do check-ins work?
Basically, at the beginning of the check-in, I post a list of all the people who have signed up for the event and what projects they currently have listed in their sign-up. If someone has put in an answer about what they would like to have done by a particular checkpoint, I will also include that information in the post to remind people of what their progress plans were. There will then be a form that can be used to give project updates, but this is optional.

I finished my WIP very early. Does it still count? Do I have to wait until August to post it?
Yes, it counts and no, you do not have to wait. You can post it to whatever sites you like as soon as you finish it, and add it to the AO3 collection as well. The promotion period is when the work will be highlighted/advertised, but it can be posted anytime before that point. Alternatively, you can instead choose to hold it until the August posting days, but this is up to you.

I put some work into my WIP but I am definitely not going to have anything done by August. Should I drop out?
Even if you have not finished your project, you are very welcome to publish whatever you've got and use that as the work you did for this event. While the goal of this event is to finish something, any progress is progress, so we're happy to celebrate whatever you did during the event to push your projects forward!

I am very stuck with my WIP and need help...
I recommend talking about your problems on Discord! See the bottom of this post for the Discord community links.

Promotion period

What is the promotion period?
The promotion period is a set of dates where we advertise works made for this challenge on the various Quo-do the Thing! social media accounts. At the time the promotion post is made, either the finished work OR a new installment of the work must have been posted somewhere. It is not a requirement that the whole work be posted by the promotion period, but there must be something new to look at.

The purpose of the promotion period is (1) to give people a concrete deadline by which they must have fully finished at least part of their work, (2) to have a concentrated period of time where works made for the event are brought to people's attention, and (3) to stagger posting so that there isn't a flood of new works all at once.

I already posted a work before the promotion period / before date-claiming started. Can I still claim a date?
Yep! Promotion dates for all works are scheduled in August, but works can be published anytime earlier.

I have a big work that I don't want to have to post all at once. Do I need to have the whole thing posted by my promotion date?
No, the promotion date is when you have to start posting by. However, there are 13-16 weeks after the promotion period (depending on whether your posting date is toward the beginning or end of the promotion period) to slowly post longer works. So if you have a very meaty multichapter WIP that you need to post in installments over a long period of time, you can post it slowly from August to November. If you wish, you can even start posting in installments before the posting period begins.

Do I have to have my whole work finished by the promotion period, or can I work on it during the weeks after?
While you only have to have *something* posted by the end of the promotion period, I recommend treating the August check-in as the due date of this event, at least for everything except for a final round of edits. For those who like to live dangerously, there is still a bit of buffer time in between the August check-in and your posting date, and between the promotion period and the end of the event, and if it works better for you to think of the promotion period as the soft deadline and the end of the event/round-up as the hard deadline, that is perfectly fine with me. However, it may work better for the purposes of time management and the social aspect of this event to treat the August check-in as the hard deadline and to reserve the final posting period for posting only, rather than for creating too.

What are the amnesty posting dates for?
They're for posting works if you missed your date, missed the date-claiming window, weren't sure if you would have anything ready to post, etc. If you have a work and weren't able to post it earlier in August, feel free to post it now and bring it to the attention of the event accounts for sharing.

I won't be able to post in the promotion period in general. Is there a way to post later?
Yes, but you'll need to contact the mod to make arrangements.

Final posting period and wrap-up

What is the final posting period? How is it different from the promotion period?
The final posting period occurs after the main bulk of the event is over and is quite a long period over which people are allowed to spread out the posting of their work to avoid (e.g.) dropping a huge amount of fanfic words on people all at once, say. If the work was not quite finished by the initial promotion date, the final posting period also gives the creator a bit more time to finish it off and post it for the event. The promotion dates are to highlight works made for this event while the final posting period is to give the creator flexibility with posting a longer work and allow them to control the timing of how they share their full work to the public.

How long will the posting period last?
It's currently scheduled to last until November 30th. It is possible that we might end early if all participants have finished posting all of their works and no longer need the final posting period.

Do I get to announce when my work has finished posting?
Yes. For works posting in installments, in addition to the promotion date allocated during the promotion period, they get a second promotion date when the work has been fully posted. If you're posting in installments, please let me know when the work is fully posted and we will share the complete work on social media.

What works get included in the masterlist/event wrap-up post?
Any work posted for this event by the end of the final posting period, whether finished or not.
