Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Family Business"
This week we're discussing... episode 3x23 "Family Business"!
Episode synopsis: Quark receives an unexpected visit from Brunt, an agent of the Ferengi Commerce Authority, charging him with allowing his mother to earn profit. Quark is forced to go back to Ferenginar for the first time in 20 years in order to wring the earned money and a confession out of his business-savvy mother. Meanwhile, Jake tries to set his dad up with a visiting freighter captain, Kasidy Yates.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: This is a Quark-centric episode so he's going back to Ferenginar and getting into arguments with his mom. Odo has a couple of scenes: first with Quark where Quark announces he's returning home and tells Odo to watch his bar while he's gone, and then later, Odo watches as Bashir and O'Brien attempt to unlock Quark's closed-down bar in order to retrieve their dartboard.

- Quark and Odo's scene in this one is so shippy. 😂 Quark just stops by Odo's office to tell him he's leaving and to take care of his bar while he's away (they're married). Odo lets drop that he knows the FCA visited and when Quark asks how, Odo just scoffs, lmao (stalker Odo).
- Jadzia: "Let me just put it this way: if I were Curzon, I'd have stolen her from you by now." -- lol this is such a funny way to endorse someone.
- Quark's relationship with his mother is so perfect. Ishka: (to Rom) "You can stay as long as you like." (to Quark) "Or leave whenever you like."
- Lol, Bashir and O'Brien's one obligatory scene is great. I love both Sisko and Odo teasing them about their attachment to their dartboard, and then O'Brien giving Bashir the stink eye when Bashir pins the station gossip on him. XD
- I also like how clearly it's established that Rom (and also Keldar) is the emotional glue holding the family together.
- Ishka: "I don't think Quark knows how lucky he is to have a brother as loyal as you." Rom: "He knows. He just doesn't like showing it." -- more tsundere Quark. I do like how Rom is one of the only characters who sees through Quark's facade this way.
- Random, but I love seeing all of Rom's outfits in this episode (including pajamas! -- not the first time we've seen him in pajamas, but it's fun). Also, love Quark's blue screen of death reaction after finding out his mom is richer than he is.
- I love all the Ferengi worldbuilding details in this episode. The part with the elevator in the Tower of Commerce and haggling for the price of taking a seat in the lobby is so fun.
- Rom losing his temper is the best part of this episode.
- I love this date between Kasidy and Ben because it's kind of not going so well because Kasidy is distracted and sounds like she's making an excuse to leave early, and Ben isn't used to or particularly enthused about dating in general... and then Ben just goes into Crazy Baseball Fan Mode and that totally changes his demeanor from his cold professional persona into his warm dad persona. XD
Overall, this is one of my favorite Quark (and Rom) episodes. Getting to see Ferenginar for the very first time here is great, and so is getting to see so much of Quark's backstory/early family life. I teared up at seeing him and Ishka reconcile.
Quodo potential:
- I'm... kind of surprised this episode doesn't already have a Quodo fic for it? I just think their one scene together works well for a shippier "secretly married" read.
- Or you could extend their conversation here and have Odo and Quark discuss Quark's mother in more detail, or women's rights on Ferenginar, or Brunt's earlier visit to Quark's bar -- lots of possible topics of conversation that you can dive deeper into.
- Or you could add Odo to a scene, like have him in the background listening to Quark and Rom's conversation with Brunt, or even joining in.
- Or for a more drastic AU, I feel like this episode works really well for Odo going to Ferenginar and meeting Ishka. (Heck, you could combine it with the "married all along" read and have Odo viewing it as a good opportunity to meet Quark's mother (and also support Quark as he deals with this issue) and Quark is just stressed out the entire time. Or Odo might just be hitchhiking because he's curious/worried about Quark. Lots of possibilities!!)
