Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "In the Cards"
This week we're discussing... episode 5x25 "In the Cards"!
Episode synopsis: Jake and Nog go on an elaborate fetch quest to get their hands on a rare baseball card in order to cheer up Captain Sisko. Meanwhile, Kai Winn is called to the station to meet with Weyoun about a potential non-aggression treaty between Bajor and the Dominion.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo appears in the glum dinner that opens the episode, revealing the depressing news that he's canceled his trip to Bajor because thefts of food and medical supplies have dramatically increased on the station. Quark has two scenes: one where he encourages Jake and Nog to look at items being sold at an upcoming auction, and one where he oversees the auction. Finally, Odo has one more scene where Jake and Nog come to him inquiring about the sudden disappearance of Dr. Giger.

no subject
- "How hard can it be?" [end teaser on this optimistic statement] lol.
- So many things I love about this episode: The whole concept of Jake buying a present for his dad using Nog's money. XD I love how sweet Jake wanting to do something for his dad is, and Nog supporting him throughout. This is so wholesome. Dr. Giger is just such a Character immediately. The height difference between Nog and Jake at this point in the series! XD Nog and Jake's reactions to Giger being an obvious crank. The introduction of Kukalaka to canon. Nog and Jake are such great roommates. "Lions, Gigers, bears." XD Kai Winn being tasked with using ultimate dissembling and passive aggression on Weyoun is A+ villain vs. villain content. Nog being so annoyed about Jake wanting to keep the card a secret and not call in any favors. I like that even Weyoun has a chance in this episode to do something nice.
- I really like how the A plot here is Jake and Nog antics while the B plot is high politics war negotiations. And the points where the two plots interact are great. Weyoun getting into Dr. Giger's machine at the end always cracks me up.
- While it's funny, I doubt Odo would kick Jake and Nog out of his office for filing a false report. He would probably just go "Uh-huh..." very skeptically and say sarcastically he'll keep an eye out for these "minions of the orthodoxy..." in a way that makes it clear he doesn't believe them and so make them feel bad for coming to talk to him.
Overall, I think this is one of the best DS9 episodes -- I feel like the writers are firing on all cylinders here. They know the characters so well and are so confident in the appeal of the characters that they're willing to risk a very silly, almost filler episode (and it's not even filler because Bajor's decision to neither ally with the Federation nor the Dominion turns out to drive a lot of plot later!). And they push some of the characters a bit out of their usual zone (e.g. Weyoun being nice and Winn getting the chance to one-up another villain in pettiness, and being victimized by Jake and Nog of all people!), and it works! The ending where Jake and Nog's antics managed to effect a change on the whole station's mood is chef's kiss. DS9 is often accused of being the "dark" Star Trek and in some sense, it is. But it's their ability to write light-hearted episodes like these and inject humor into even serious situations that makes the darkness of the show bearable and also interesting. A+ episode.
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- Uh... hm. I'm a bit at a loss for this one, to be honest. This is maybe a bit of an ambitious idea, but neither Odo nor Quark were people whom Jake and Nog did favors for in this episode (I think?), so maybe you could insert a plotline for those two. Like, maybe Odo and Quark are arguing/annoyed at each other because something has gone missing on the station and Odo thinks Quark is involved, and Jake and Nog inadvertently end up finding the missing thing and clearing Quark's name. Or there's some other kind of misunderstanding or feud between Odo and Quark that Jake and Nog end up clearing up, and they sheepishly apologize to each other or something like that.
