Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Second Sight"
We're back from our first mid-season break. Also, Quodo Mini-fest sign-ups are open! Anyway, this week we're discussing... episode 2x09 "Second Sight"!
Episode synopsis: Around the anniversary of Jennifer's death, Ben encounters a new woman on the station whom he has chemistry with. The only problem is that she keeps mysteriously disappearing.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo has a couple scenes: one where Sisko comes in to talk to him about finding any information about the mysterious Fenna, and a follow-up where he reports his findings. Quark also has one scene where he comforts a Sisko who has been stood up by Fenna.

- Lol, average Star Trek scientist.
- I love this running gag of Jake taking love advice from Nog and Ben just breathing deeply in through his nose about it. XD
- "Keep him under constant surveillance, but remember, he's a short-range telepath, so stay at least five meters away from him at all times. That's all." -- I like this random snippet of Odo conversation about some sketchy guy on the station.
- "No, I understand. It's hard to talk man to man with a woman." -- Dax is being cute lmao. She wants the goss!
- Kira is struggling so much.
- I like bartender Quark offering consolation here. "I've even seen it in the mirror once or twice." lmao.
- Overall, I have mixed thoughts on this one. As I mentioned (a) according to the DS9 Companion, the love interest in this episode was originally meant to be for Bashir, which makes so much more sense to me, but (b) I still think the version with Sisko works because it's an important part of his emotional development. It's nice Sisko gets a temporary love interest here that indicates he's starting to heal and emotionally open to a new relationship; DS9 is a place of struggle but also a place of healing. He doesn't get many one-episode love interest plots in the series (I think this is his only one?), so it's a kind of interesting usage of it here. THAT SAID, this episode is otherwise totally forgettable and skippable, IMO, which means the work it's doing for Ben's emotional journey ends up being kind of wasted. I just wish it were a stronger episode!
- I've always been kind of meh about the scientist character too. I see what they were going for with his personality, but it's simultaneously a bit too comical/one-note/exaggerated and also too flat/muted. I guess what I'm saying is that he just doesn't really end up feeling real. We don't really get a strong sense of him, so I don't have much emotional reaction to him at all, positive or negative. Therefore, his decision to sacrifice himself lacks the weight and bittersweetness you'd want it to have. As a viewer, I'm just like, "Okay, see ya."
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
Uhhh this one's a toughie.
- A missing scene with Quark and Odo gossiping about Sisko's interest in Fenna with each other?
- Use the "I've even seen it in the mirror once or twice" line to launch into a gratuitous flashback where Quark waited for Odo at the bar (sometime in the past) and Odo stood him up. 🥲
- I guess this episode's general weakness and the fact that it was originally centered on a different character opens up the possibility of just doing a whole episode rewrite -- keep the same premise or something similar, but center it on Quark and Odo instead?
