Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Homefront"
This week we're discussing... episode 4x11 "Homefront"!
Episode synopsis: This is the first episode of a two-parter about paranoia on Earth following a Changeling terrorist attack: Sisko and Odo return to Earth to bulk up security procedures designed to detect Changelings. In the midst of this, Earth's power grid is unexpectedly sabotaged, triggering a state of emergency and martial law on Earth.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark and Odo have a short scene together toward the beginning where Odo complains to Quark about Dax moving all his furniture. Quark has one more scene where he talks about concern for one's homeworld with Bashir and O'Brien. Odo is a major character in this episode, having several scenes mainly around Earth's security, including a short conversation with O'Brien and Bashir about visiting Earth, being smuggled into the president's office as a briefcase, testing Changeling-revealing technologies, detecting a Changeling disguised as Admiral Leyton, and urging the president to declare a state of emergency.

- Huh, the opening to this episode is a bit disorienting. A lot of things happening all in the small space.
- Speaking of which, one thing I'm noticing in this randomized watch-through is that there is this genre of scenes where it begins with Quark telling the punchline of a joke to Morn in his bar before someone comes in. I think there's been three(?) so far but somehow I never noticed these when watching DS9 the first time...
1x11 "The Nagus":
Quark: And so the Andorian says, "Your brother? I thought it was your wife." (chuckles)
Morn: (Thinking)
Quark: Get it? Wife?
Morn: (Laughs)
Quark: Had to think about that one, didn't you?
Krax: I'm looking for Quark.
1x14 "Storyteller":
Quark: So I sold them a whole herd of Klingon targs! Major, what a pleasant surprise.
4x11 "Homefront":
Quark: Then the Andorian says, "That's not my antenna."
Morn: (Pauses to think about it for a long time.)
Quark: (Rolls eyes) Why do I bother?
Odo: QUAARRK!
- Oh, huh, I also didn't know that Ben has a sister named Judith either. Grandpa Sisko is such a dad. I love the family dynamics.
- I like that we get to see Nog in these episodes. He's off studying at the academy, so I like that they took the opportunity of an episode set on Earth to have him show up.
- Actually, this whole episode is kinda disorienting. What are these scenes?? 😂
- "Now why would you go and do a stupid thing like that?" -- love Grandpa Sisko XD It's just a fun dynamic that no matter how important and powerful a figure in Starfleet Ben is, to Joseph he's still just "my son who I can scold."
Overall, this is one of my favorite episodes, and almost entirely because of Grandpa Sisko, to be honest. He's such a great character and I love how stubborn and cranky he is. Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that I like the president of Earth featured in this episode too.
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- Uhhh I don't know, I like how in this episode it's a bit ambiguous whether Quark is in on Dax's whole "nudge Odo's furniture around" evil scheme. He definitely seems like he already knew about it, but he doesn't actually own up to it. Seems like you could flesh it out in a fic a little, like have what Quark is thinking during that scene -- either him trying to keep a straight face or him finding it cute that Odo is getting so worked up over a little bit of disorder or something. Or like a prequel where Quark and Dax plotted the scheme together, or something. Or where they sneak into Odo's quarters while he's on Earth and hang out there and talk and move his furniture again.
- Or maybe add a scene where Quark says goodbye to Odo when he leaves for Earth or something.
