Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "If Wishes Were Horses"
This week we're discussing... episode 1x16 "If Wishes Were Horses"!
Episode synopsis: Following some anomalous readings in the nearby plasma field, people's imaginations begin to take on physical form. The crew has to figure out what is going on before the anomaly destroys the whole station.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo and Quark both have three main scenes in this episode, all together. In the opening, Quark tries to explain the appeal of holosuites but is thwarted by Odo's disdain for fantasy. Later, Odo goes to Quark's to announce the situation with figments of imagination becoming real and is greeted by Quark who is happily indulging his fantasy of being with scandily-clad women, until Odo informs him his gambling customers are taking him to the poorhouse. Finally, Odo, after chasing down various figments on the promenade, is teased by Quark for not having imagined up anything, and Odo returns to his office and imagines Quark in his holding cells.

- So awkward for Bashir to show up in Ops with his fantasy Jadzia. :'D I feel like sometimes people interpret Bashir's freakout in this episode to indicate he's gay or not seriously attracted to Jadzia / mainly pursuing Jadzia as a kind of performative show and I'm not sure about that... Admittedly, there is something a bit "dog who caught the car" to Bashir's reaction here, but I also think it is rational given Bashir's model of Jadzia (including that she had just finished turning him down) that he finds her behavior a bit shocking and out-of-character here, and that's consistent with him still being attracted to her and pursuing her. If she slowly warmed up to him, I think he would find that desirable and not unexpected (although not particularly expected either), but doing a 180 degree turn on a dime is something else entirely, and I think Bashir has an accurate enough mental model of Jadzia to know there is something off here.
- I do feel a bit sorry for Kira that her only imagining in this episode is like explosions and a man on fire. It does make you wonder if that's meant to be a deeper indication of her mental state at this point, or if it was just an idle thought/fear without much deeper meaning.
- I had to pause it, but when the attempt to collapse the rift backfires and the station is hit, is... Quark under a table with his girls, trying to reach for some latinum?? So random!
- This episode is wild -- I like how the whole subspace rupture turns out to be a red herring and instead it's just aliens. All that technobabble for nothing... u_u (Whenever O'Brien and Dax are trading off with their technobabble analysis and solutions, as they're doing a lot in this episode, I always think of this clip.) Also, that Sisko gets his baseball in this episode. What a random episode for something that ends up being so consequential!
- To be honest, I find this episode pretty boring *except* for the Quodo plotline here. Like, even the aliens' and Sisko's ruminations on imagination and what it says about the human condition or whatever isn't particularly interesting to me, although I *do* find Odo's personal relationship to imagination (and desire, fantasy, etc.) fascinating. Maybe that's just me, though. Very typical first season episode, IMO -- TNG-like first contact situation, not a particularly memorable episode.
(The Quark and Odo plotline here IS really good though. It's just very them -- the sexual tension! The sublimated attraction!)
Quodo potential:
I'm not surprised there are quite a few Garak/Bashir fics for this episode (the minor AU immediately presents itself), but I am a bit surprised there's nothing for Quodo.
- I know it's been done before in a general way, but I feel like there's a specific moment in this episode where Odo is considering what it would be like to take on the form of a sexy woman just to get Quark's attention. At least that's what I think. XD
- Or just more generally could delve into Odo's jealousy/disgust/etc. reaction to seeing Quark walking around with women on his arms, and/or Quark's psychology of why he keeps wanting to make sure Odo has seen him with his pretty women.
- Also, it would be SO EASY to just... extend Odo's fantasy regarding Quark, a little. XD Some low-hanging fruit here, folks!
- Or you could have a little coda where Quark finds out about Odo's fantasy and decides to make a holoprogram just for him. He's not going to pass up the opportunity to exploit someone's vices and make a sale!
