Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Progress"
Annnd... we're back in season 1 again. XD This week we're discussing... episode 1x15 "Progress"!
Episode synopsis: Kira is tasked with kicking a stubborn farmer off one of Bajor's moons, which is going to be used for an energy extraction procedure. Meanwhile, Nog and Jake are convinced that they can turn Quark's five thousand wrappages of unwanted Cardassian yamok sauce into a profit.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Quark appears several times in this episode: first, chewing out an employee for ordering yamok sauce, then giving Nog permission to dispose of the sauce, then (in a scene with Odo) being informed that someone is trying to contact the "Noh-Jay Consortium" to get them to sell their land, and then finally Quark realizing who the Noh-Jay Consortium is.

- Huh, based on the episode title, I thought this was a different episode (I confused it with the one where the alternate Emissary comes through the wormhole). But I'm pleasantly surprised because I really love this episode!
- Nog is so cute in this episode. 🥰
- Ahhh I love Kira in this episode.
- In the notes for this episode in the DS9 Companion, the writer Peter Allen Fields mentioned that Mullibok was meant to be a much nastier, meaner character than what ended up on screen. The actor Brian Keith instead gave the character a warmth and endearing quality that changed the character and his dynamic with Kira, which I think is interesting. I do wonder if I would have liked the episode better or worse with the mean Mullibok.
- Nog's interaction with Quark here is interesting -- Quark is a mix of mean and kind to him.
- I love Nog and Jake's scene with O'Brien here. So funny that they're trying to bluff their way through it, and O'Brien doesn't even know what self-sealing stem bolts are. XD
- Jake is also adorable in this episode -- following his lobes. XD
- I love the scene with Sisko and Bashir in this one -- it shows Sisko's style of command. He's pretty comfortable using procedure and other people's roles in order to fix things to get the outcome he wants. I guess this kind of coheres with the way he uses Garak and their separation of roles in "In the Pale Moonlight."
- And I also love the scene with Sisko and Kira. It's a big growing moment for Kira and also for Bajor too -- needing to embrace that independence means authority, which means sometimes having to be the Bad Guy, the New Boss, and take responsibility for making the hard calls.
- Love every conversation that Jake and Nog have in this episode. They have two brain cells but they're always trying their best. XD
- If you will allow me to gush about the Quark and Odo scene in this one (well, if not here, where else?): I LOVE their scene in this one. The mysterious shady lighting as they discuss WHO could possibly be doing business on DS9 without Quark knowing; I also love how Quark and Odo feel a bit like two parents in this scene while Jake and Nog are their children; and I love that Quark and Odo just regularly talk to each other this way: "And you think that I'm part of this consortium?" "I think very little goes on here without your knowledge." Their dynamic is sooo good. XD
Quodo potential:
Well, now that I've gushed about their scene together, it feels a bit hard to top it. XD I guess this episode does work well with an established relationship read for Quark and Odo, where they seem like they're on opposite sides but actually their relationship is very cooperative and they clearly share information. Maybe have an extended scene like the one above where Quark and Odo are not QUITE complimenting each other as a way of flirting?
