Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Soldiers of the Empire"
I'm posting a bit early today because I'm traveling. Depending on how busy I am over the holidays, I might push the next episode discussion back a week, but we'll see. This week we're discussing... episode 5x21 "Soldiers of the Empire"! Happy holidays, everyone!
Episode synopsis: Worf is asked to accompany Martok on his first mission after being rescued from Internment Camp 371. Dax also joins the mission and she and Worf soon realize that the fear that Martok has been broken by his time in the camp threatens morale and order on the whole ship.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo has a short scene towards the beginning where he follows some members of the crew of the Rotarran into Quark's bar and points out one of them is wearing a necklace of Cardassian neck bones. Quark doesn't appear.

- Helpful of them to give us the rules for challenging authority on a Klingon ship. This will come in handy later!
- "I do not wish to insult someone who brought me wine..." -- the Klingons are great. XD Also, I love how demoralized this crew is.
- "Alert Status 1" -- interesting. It's different from Defense Condition 1 in 7x07.
- Love the Klingon engineer woman, Tavana. I didn't remember her, but she is very cool. Leskit is also great. I love how insolent he is. Chaos crew member. XD
- I do like getting to see Dax so familiar with how to be a Klingon officer on a ship.
- This episode always makes me sad thinking of Worf's brother Kurn living out an amnesiac life somewhere, never knowing Worf eventually was adopted into Martok's house? A bit depressing...
- I do like the opening scene with Bashir and Martok -- it's clear that there is a familiarity between them due to their time in the internment camp together and that Martok is willing to be a bit vulnerable around Bashir for that reason, but still not fully.
Overall, I guess this episode isn't a particularly stand-out episode, but has some interesting elements to it, like character study of Martok and also how Klingon ships work, the focus on morale, and an interesting dynamic between Dax and Worf as two outsiders serving on a Klingon vessel while also being in a relationship with each other. And Worf joining Martok's house here does have some interesting implications in future episodes (I'm thinking of Dax and Worf's wedding in particular).
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- Obviously not a great episode for Quodo, but I feel like that makes it pretty easy to write a gratuitous Quark scene into this episode, like have Quark and Odo in Quark's bar gossiping about the Rotarran's crew, or about General Martok, or have a kind of "meanwhile back on the station" sort of plot to go along with this episode.
