Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Invasive Procedures"
This week we're discussing... episode 2x04 "Invasive Procedures"!
Episode synopsis: During a plasma storm when only a minimal crew of senior officers is left aboard DS9, the station is boarded by a small crew led by an unjoined Trill who is determined to become the new Dax, even if it means ending Jadzia's life.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo and Quark have a scene together in the opening where Odo comes across Quark sitting suspiciously by himself in an airlock and they banter. Odo then gets forced by Verad's crew into a container at gunpoint and spends most of the episode like that; Quark tries and fails to get paid for his assistance in bypassing station security and ends up captured. After spending a while in Ops, Quark gets injured and sent to the infirmary, where he provides a distraction to allow Bashir to disable his guard, and then picks the lock on the container Odo is in. Odo then confronts the invaders at the airlock.

- I like O'Brien just being like "😐" as Odo and Quark bicker extensively in front of him.
- There are so many KiraDax moments in these early seasons!
- Also, absolutely wild fight scene here. It's so rare to see Kira lose a hand-to-hand fight.
- Man, I can't believe I never noticed this before, but joined Verad has a different hair-styling than pre-joined Verad -- it's slicked back rather than just hanging over his face.
- I always find this episode wild because Quark just gets away with a serious crime and it's not resolved in this episode and is totally back to normal next episode?? I mean, I think Kira's character is basically written as much more hostile to Quark starting from this episode up until he rescues Rom in season 6 (not like she *wasn't* hostile before, though) but aside from that, there's basically no lasting consequences. I know what they're going for here, like, Quark's criminal tendencies can get other people into trouble but his criminal tendencies can also get them out, but WHAT?? Multiple people's lives as well as control of the station/wormhole itself were threatened just because Quark wanted to sell some contraband and everyone's just OK with that I guess?? He should have gone to jail. 😂
- Okay, other than that, this episode is not super memorable. I think some of the aspects of this episode that might be potentially interesting to me (the identity issues related to Trill joinings; Jadzia in a rare moment as *Jadzia* (as opposed to Jadzia Dax); Sisko's bargaining / Mareel's sad sack backstory / the emotional tug-of-war between Ben, Verad, and Mareel; Bashir being put in the impossible position of operating on Jadzia) just kinda fall flat to me, for some reason. At least we get some nice Quodo interactions?
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- You could definitely do an established/secret relationship read here, where Odo and Quark having some couple's fights in this one, or Quark being more worried about Odo than he lets on.
- You could add some missing scenes filling some holes in this one, like Odo coming out of his box to the unfortunate news that Quark is responsible for his rescue. More banter! Or fix this episode by having Odo (+ Kira?) figuring out what to do about Quark and providing the audience an explanation as to why Quark didn't go to jail for this...
- Another established relationship fic idea: Maybe Odo being forced into a box gives Quark ideas for Changeling-friendly bondage or roleplay scenarios, IDK!
