Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "Shadowplay"
This week we're discussing... episode 2x16 "Shadowplay"!
Episode synopsis: Dax and Odo visit a planet in the Gamma Quadrant and investigate a mystery where villagers keep suddenly going missing. Meanwhile, Kira, in charge of keeping Quark in line while Odo is away, gets an unexpected visit from Vedek Bareil. Meanwhile, Jake struggles to tell his dad that he's not interested in the activities Ben has set up to prepare him for applying to Starfleet Academy.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: This is an Odo-centric episode -- he is discussing his love life with Dax, investigating a mystery, and bonding with a girl who is openly and innocently curious about his Changeling nature and life. Quark has the B-plot where he is foiled by Kira in his attempts to do crimes while Odo is gone and he almost successfully manages to distract Kira by arranging for Bareil to visit the station.

- This is one of my favorite episodes, and this opening scene is one of my favorite Dax/Odo interactions. Despite some of the episodes this season being a bit meh, I do like that they're throwing weird combos of characters at us.
- There's a little cut line from this opening scene in the script:
Odo: Why is it that whenever you do something socially unacceptable, you blame it on being a Trill?
Dax: (playful) Why is it that whenever you get flustered, you start sounding like you're conducting a police investigation?
- Actually, there's a lot of lines cut from the script, although they're pretty minor. I guess this episode went over time.
- Another Quark cousin in this one: Kono.
- Kira calls Quark a collaborator in this one. He's so misunderstood. :')
- I like how the previous episode had Sisko discussing Jake apprenticing with O'Brien and it's mentioned in this one. Also, Jake here hasn't yet told his dad he doesn't want to go to Starfleet Academy. Oh yeah, Sisko pajamas.
- I like the costumes in this one.
- Another cut Odo/Dax scene:
INT. RUNABOUT -- Dax is at work at the controls. Odo ENTERS from the back.
Dax: You're out of your bucket early today.
Odo: My regenerative cycle rarely varies. There's no reason to stay "in-the-bucket" any longer than I have to. (looks down at the monitors) Have you found anything?
Dax: Not a thing. There're no other ships in orbit... no other settlements on the planet... and no power source except the reactor...
Odo: So you're sure the woman wasn't transported out of her workroom?
Dax: It's too early to rule out anything, but Colyus and I couldn't find any residual electrostatic charge. (a beat) What about the little girl. Did she see anything?
Odo: (uncomfortable) I'm not sure yet. I wasn't able to get much out of her last night. I'll try again today. (reflective) I'm afraid I'm not very good with children.
Dax: (mild surprise) You're around children all the time on the Promenade.
Odo: Being around children and communicating with children are two entirely different things.
Dax: (wryly) I'll let you in on a little secret, Odo... Children are just like adults, only smaller.
Odo: (doesn't buy it) I'll keep that in mind.
- Sweet Sisko moment 😠Just the soft way Cirroc delivers the "Starfleet is too much like you. I need to find what's me," line is so good.
- Matchmaker Quark lol.
- From the DS9 Companion, apparently the original version of this episode was also focused on being stuck in a hologram simulation and not being able to tell what's real, but it featured Dax and O'Brien stuck in a virtual-reality prison where, after a fake escape where they're still stuck in the simulation, it ends on a downer note where O'Brien confesses to Keiko that he doesn't know if he's still in a simulation and doesn't think he'll ever know. Obviously this O'Brien emotional beat became the basis for 4x19 "Hard Time" while the plot centered around the plot twist of being in a simulation was used in 3x02 "The Search Part II." I guess a similar plot will also end up being used in 7x23 "Extreme Measures" -- DS9 likes this plot! However, this particular episode ended up being pushed in a different, more happy direction, centered around the hologram characters who thought they were real.
- Overall, I like this one! Gruff Odo getting soft around kids is just a very wholesome dynamic, and I think Colyus is pretty adorable. I think it's a nice dynamic for Odo to be seen through a child's eyes as a kind of fairy tale creature because it's not how he tends to conceive of himself, but he kind of "wears" that identity well in this situation. Even with all the scenes cut out from the script, the final version of the episode works really well and is quite tight.
- Huh, I just realized something a bit weird, which is how does Rurigan get food? I guess the most likely answer is that he has a secret real replicator he uses to make his own food, but I also wonder if he was receiving food shipments from Yadera Prime or something, or if the holograms produce enough real food to support him.
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- Huh, I guess you could have some interaction between Quark and Odo / tie the plotlines together a bit. Maybe Quark being excited that Odo is away but then keeps thinking about him or something. Or Odo finding out what Quark got up to on the station and being sad he missed it or something.
- This episode is pretty heavy on Odo's feelings about being a Changeling and trying to find his family and stuff, so you could have Quark and Odo talking about Odo's feelings/experiences related to this.
- Maybe Dax isn't the only person who has noticed Lysia Arlin being interested in Odo... Cue Quark being jealous or talking with her in the bar in order to suss out her intentions w.r.t. Odo, lol.
