Quodo in Every Episode discussion: "In the Hands of the Prophets"
This week we're discussing... episode 1x20 "In the Hands of the Prophets"! Kind of amazingly, we have *almost* discussed every third episode of season 1 now (1x03, 1x05, 1x08, 1x11, 1x14, 1x17 and now 1x20). Aside from 1x03, they're all three episodes apart.
Episode synopsis: The episode that introduces Winn: Keiko and Vedek Winn clash over how information about the wormhole and the Prophets within should be taught and Sisko seeks out Vedek Bareil's support in order to prevent this from escalating into a schism between Bajor and the Federation. Meanwhile, one of O'Brien's engineers is murdered and O'Brien discovers evidence that someone has sabotaged the station's security in advance of Bareil's visit to the station.
What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo has a few scenes: one where he intervenes in a confrontation between O'Brien and the jumja vendor and a couple of scenes where he is trying to figure out what happened to Ensign Aquino. Quark has one scene with Odo where Odo asks Quark if he has any info on who could have killed Aquino.

- The opening scene of this episode is one of my favorite Miles/Keiko scenes.
- "How would you like a jumja stick up--" Lol Miles. XD
- I love Winn in this episode. ❤️
- I feel like this episode is maybe a bit *too* much of a response to creationism/intelligent design vs. evolution debates at the time that it ends up weakening the episode a bit? For example: inaccurate characterization of Galileo's conflict with the Church, and using the wormhole and wormhole aliens here is a bit odd because it's kind of like having a religious debate about the existence of God, when, like, God is right there. He physically exists and you can talk to him in this particular case. I don't know if it's the intention, but it makes the religious vs. secular debate almost hair-splitting/a question of labels compared to equivalent present-day debates, but IDK, I haven't thought about this that much. THAT SAID, I think this episode is generally a banger so I don't really mind any of that.
- Great Quodo scene in this one ☺️ "You wound me. All the years together. I thought you knew me." -- They're extremely married, right? XD Don't mind me, just interrogating my nemesis as we lean in towards each other intimately.... Also, I love Quark's joke about religious types. Once again, it is so INTERESTING how often he brings up sex when talking to Odo...
- Winn being like "you might die, yes, but you will be amply rewarded in the afterlife"... Using religion to radicalize the youth -- love that for her. I also love that the religious fundamentalism is actually just a smokescreen/stratagem in service of Winn's ultimate objective, which is becoming kai. Amazing. Absolutely incredible. Winn is one of Star Trek's best characters, IMO, and this episode is such a strong start to her character.
- I wonder if this episode is one of the first to feature characters using the title "Emissary" to refer to Sisko. I remember it not being very common in the first season, but Winn does it several times in this episode.
Thoughts on Quodo potential:
- Hm, it is once again a bit hard to top what is already in this episode... Maybe you could write an extended scene for Quark and Odo's conversation in this episode. I feel like there's a lot of places where it could go into a bit of a detour, like talking about previous cases Odo has investigated, talking about Rules of Acquisition... add a bit more innuendo?
- Something on the theme of jumja sticks?
