Quark/Odo fan community

Hi everyone! The next four episodes are ones we have all discussed before, so I thought it would be good to dedicate at least two weeks to discussing them (until 13 July). Feel free to watch or peruse the transcripts of these episodes and look at the discussions below for some possible Quodo fic ideas, and leave whatever thoughts you have over there. Two of these episodes already have Quodo fics written for them, while two don't.

This week we're discussing... episode 1x12 "Vortex"!

Episode synopsis: Odo is stuck guarding a prisoner named Croden, a murderer and wanted criminal from the Gamma Quadrant who potentially possesses a clue to Odo's origins -- information about a colony of "changeling" shapeshifters like Odo -- which he's willing to divulge in exchange for his freedom.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Omg, so much... This is an Odo-centric episode where the focus is on Odo's interactions with Croden, but Quark plays a major role in it. In the opening, he and Odo discuss the Miradorn and other disreputable characters currently on the station and whether Quark has been in contact with them. Quark orchestrates an armed robbery, which Odo interrupts, ending with one Miradorn dead and Croden in jail. When Croden claims to know a colony of changelings, Odo presses Quark for information that could corroborate this knowledge, but Quark doesn't have any. Odo ends up escorting Croden to be tried on his home planet, but is pursued by the second Miradorn who has threatened Quark in order to find out Odo and Croden's location. After wading through Croden's many lies, Odo finally discovers his truth: he lives to be reunited with his daughter. Having worked together to successfully escape the Miradorn, Odo decides to sneak Croden and his daughter on a Vulcan ship to give them a shot at a new life rather than turn Croden over to his government.

Hi everyone! This week we have something a bit different -- our first mid-season writing break. No new episode this week; instead, this is a chance to get some writing done on a QIEE fic. Or get caught up on episodes if you're behind.

How are people doing? I feel like we went at a kind of breakneck pace for the first half of season 1. I was planning on switching to breaks every eight episodes starting from season 2, but now I'm wondering if even that is a bit too long without breaks, so maybe I'll switch to having a writing break every 5 weeks/episodes? What do people think?

Anyway, feel free to chat about what you're working on. You can work on a fic for any episode, or focus on the episodes we've discussed so far, episodes 1x01-1x10 (you can check here for coverage of those episodes and links to each of their discussions). This week we're discussing... episode 1x09 "The Passenger"!

Episode synopsis: The officers at DS9 rescue a security officer transporting a dangerous prisoner. Despite the prisoner apparently dying in the transport ship accident, the security officer is convinced her prisoner is still alive and actively making preparations to hijack an upcoming deuridium shipment arriving at DS9.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: Odo and Quark share a scene toward the beginning where they talk about Dax, desire, and deuridium shipments. Odo has several scenes where he is talking to Primmin and/or Sisko about who is in charge of security on the station and responding to breaches of security, and a scene where he talks to Kajada about Vantika. Quark has several scenes where he arranges/speaks to mercenaries that he has hired at the request of Vantika. Odo and Quark have a second scene together where Quark is questioned about an attempt on Kajada's life that happened in his bar. In the rest of the episode, Odo is in Ops responding to Vantika's hijacking.

Our prompts are here! Quodo Week 2025 is a week dedicated to the Odo/Quark pairing from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It runs from August 4th to 10th with the prompts below. Basically, you create however many works you like for the set of prompts given, and then post them on the appropriate day during the week, and then we can look at what everyone created!

New discussion this week! This week we're discussing... episode 1x04 "A Man Alone"! (Fun fact: This episode was originally scheduled to be the very last episode discussed in the random ordering. So it got bumped up in the schedule by QUITE a lot!)

Episode synopsis: Odo is framed for the murder of Ibudan, a formerly-convicted criminal whom Odo put away during the Cardassian occupation. As public opinion turns against Odo, he discovers that people are not as tolerant or trusting of shapeshifters as he thought.

What The Boys are up to in this episode: This is an Odo-centric episode, so he's in various scenes confronting Ibudan, conducting a murder investigation, clashing with Sisko over his role as security chief, and being hounded by hostile mobs. Quark has two scenes with Odo, one at the beginning where they discuss "coupling" and one later when Quark visits Odo in his trashed office, and another scene where he defends Odo's honor from various critical Bajorans.

Sorry for all the posts and activities here recently, but in addition to the Quodo in Every Episode event constantly going on in the background, I am also once again going to run a summer Quodo event with a timeline of around mid-April to the end of August. Like last year, please help me pick which event you'd like me to run!

Hi everyone! Believe it or not, in four days, it will have been one year since we started the Quodo in Every Episode project (I posted the challenge information on March 23rd, and our first discussion was on March 24th). In the time since, we have discussed 47 of ST:DS9's 170 episodes (or 28%). The season with the most episodes discussed is season 1 with 10/20 episodes, while the season with the fewest episodes is season 4 with only 4/26.

Now that we are approaching this one-year milestone, I'd actually like to take some time to check in and ask if this event is working for you. Participation has dropped off quite a bit since the start, and for a while now, I've been the only one responding to episode discussions. I don't mind talking to myself (I will always enjoy a DS9 rewatch and I have fun discussing each episode with my partner), but it also makes me wonder if the interest is still there and, if so, if there are some obvious and easy things I could do to make it easier for people who want to participate to do so. Namely:

- Should I switch the discussions to be in chronological (broadcast) order? Originally, I decided on a random order because (1) I thought the random order would make it easy for someone to drop in and out of the event as their time allows, as missing some episode discussions wouldn't affect your ability to join the next conversation without having to catch up, (2) the element of surprise of what episode is under discussion each week, and (3) to mix things up between early and late seasons for the sake of variety, especially since early seasons Quodo is very different from late seasons Quodo. However, I think the main issue with doing the random order is that if someone is using this event to watch DS9 with someone who hasn't seen the show before, the random episode ordering just really doesn't work.

So: would people prefer to switch to a linear ordering of episode discussions? It would be a fairly simple change. I would probably just go through each episode in order and post a mix of catch-up posts and new episode discussions. For example, I would start with a catch-up post for the first three episodes (1x01/02 "Emissary" and 1x03 "Past Prologue") where people can watch or review the episode transcripts and post their thoughts on those on existing discussion posts, before moving on to a new discussion for 1x04 "A Man Alone", then the next week, I'd post a catch-up for 1x05 "Babel" plus new discussion for 1x06 "Captive Pursuit", and just keep progressing like that.

- Should I slow down the pace and give people more time to add their thoughts? Currently I do one episode a week but I'm happy to slow down the pace. I'm not in a rush, and it would give me more time to peruse Quodo fics lol.

- Something else? Change up the format, add some fic-writing challenges to encourage people to write or chat about what they're writing, something else preventing you from participating that I haven't thought of?

Let me know if you have any preferences about or issues with the way this challenge is run. Are people just shy? If so, let me know what would help with that. Or if people aren't particularly interested in the challenge anymore, that's fine and also helpful for me to know! Let me know what you think!
